Ghost/Hack Mail

I went to a hacking site and asked them to hack an account (one that I actually own) just to see the results. They sent me an e-mail from that exact account and when I reply to it, it actually goes to it. However I am pretty sure this is some sort of trick. Does anyone know more about this? It would be very interesting to be able to send e-mail to someone and them think it's from someone else.

Well I tested an online one but it sends the IP to the target and even warns them that it's fake.. *sigh*

I heard you can do it via SMTP but I do not want to go into all that.

Actually, that one cannot let you pose as someone else's e-mail address.
