ok guys, here is the scenario...

I have various HD's on my computer, and recently reformatted my OS HD due to virus problems. Reformat went fine, no problems. Only thing thats wrong now is that my "My Docs" folder was on a seprate HD, and under a different User, not administrator like I'm using now. I tried creating another user account with that name, but still access denied. Tried this tip from microsoft, but the "owner" tab was not there. I really need the stuff in this folder, and I can't access, move, copy, cut, etc. i was able to rename, but thats it. PLEASE HELP!!!!

If you have any knowledge of linux you can try using a liveCD to mount the HDD in question, and see if you can transfer the data that way

Just dropping by to see what going on in the forums.

Whiterabbit: In your initial install of windows xp you probably had the "My Documents" folder encrypted using windows xp built in (EFS) technology. You can read more about it here [ Microsoft EFS (http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/encrypt_overview.mspx?mfr=true) ].

Unfortunately if this is the case your data is gone. If this is not the case the new install should be able to access the folders contents if you have the correct privileges as the user logged in. This is why Microsoft also recommends combining EFS with NTFS's permissions.

Another note: Windows can be random so you should never rely on the GUI to perform functions. Try everything (read, copy) from the command prompt. I've accomplished things from the command prompt the the GUI would not let me do. Strange, because you would think the GUI simply calls these function but I've seen otherwise.

You may also want to play with the user privileges for the folder. Again, you must be logged in with an admin account. Change the current permissions of the folder to give you (the admin account) complete control over the folder. Now try and access it.

Hope one of these works for ya!
