Someone ask this question below, but it has happened again. In a chatroom a name, address and phone # was given. They said they had got it from the IP. How is it possible to get an IP from a person posting in a chatroom if the IPs are not displayed. Thanks

=================================

Any packet analyzer similar to Commview
http://www.tamos.com/products/ can be used to reveal the IP address, the name of the PC, the used port for the specific communication..

This is very simple, it is available to anyone.

Not only in a chat but also when using peer to peer (p2p) applications like napster/kazaa etc..

all you need is to start the packet analyzer and read who is connected to your PC

another simple/easy/fast way that DOES NOT require any additional program could be done as follows:

open a dos box
type netstat -a

you will see the IP list of all connections to/from your PC with their respective status (time_Wait, established, listening etc..)
