    Port 445 - Batch Script

I wrote a batch script that scans a range of ip addresses for port 445 openings and returns results of shared/open computers on the web. Is this legal?

As far as im aware port scanning is not illegal however if you over do port scans and have an adverse effect on the target system it could be argued that the port scan was, in fact, a denial-of-service (DoS) attack.

If i only sent one byte of data to each IP adress of bell south users (Cox Blocked 445)- This could not be DOS attack b.c its not targeting one machine right? I do this for a good purpose, to secure company networks. I found lawfirms, and huge companies with no firewalls and the port just hanging open w/ all of their files chared on C$ - When you call them up and tell them whats on their own computer they know your serious.
