There are many ways to not only Get but also Crack passwords. What type of mail are you using (Hotmail, Yahoo, G-mail) or what is the server that you are using?

A few questions to rule out possibilities:
Is this a friend of yours? Could you have checked your email on his computer before? How do you know someone is checking your mail? How do you know this person?
This should clarify the source -

Most email providers store cookies on your computer to keep your email session open while you are checking your mail. Im sure you've noticed how you walk away from the computer for a few minutes, come back and your asked to log back in. This is b.c your session has expired.
The problem w/ cookies: Hotmail used store their cookies in hexadecimal format. They placed a cookie w/ your username@hotmail.com on your computer. If a hacker created the same cookie w/ your username and went to hotmail.com while your session was still open they would be able to view your mail.
Change your password if you believe someone is actually snooping through your email. First scan your computer for keyloggers b.c what good will a new password do if they hacker has instand access of it.

How do you scan your computer for keyloggers b.c?
Run an AV scan, or Adaware should also pick up on keyloggers.
