Is he allowing you to access his computer or are you trying mailiciously connect to his computer?
If he is allowing you there are many ways you can connect to his computer.
Easy Example (If hes allowing it):
If you have windows you can do it through conf.exe (NetMeeting) - You both run the program... You request a connection to his IP. He either accepts or denies your connection. After connected you tell him to allow remote desktop sharing. Then ask him to select "Grant Full Control". You will know be in control of his computer from yours... Its an easy way to help a friend fix their computer w/ out leaving your house~
If thats too much trouble a great remote control application i would recommend is Dameware.
In both cases you can connect directly to the IP of the other person~
