IP Address Question

My daughter is having trouble with an anonymous person harassing her over yahoo messenger and myspace. We are almost certain we know who it is, but I want to be sure before I do anything about it. I was told from some guys at work that I could find out their IP Addresses and therefore see their names (or parent's names) and locations and stuff. Is that true? And if so, how would I go about doing it? Or is there a way to somehow see that two different myspace profiles are coming from the same IP Address?? Thanks for your help!!

Ip addresses are registered to the isp that owns them, so the address you will get from tracing an ip will be the address of the isp. Unless the ip originated from someone that has a static ip (corporate networks etc., you can trace it back to their address if they are using a static ip), but most people have a dynamic ip given to them by the isp. So no, an ip address alone will not give you that much information. For finding someone's ip, read one of the threads on this forum about it, use the search button. I think a simple answer to the problem of her getting "harassed" over instant messaging programs/myspace is to just block whoever is doing it? All IM programs allow you to block and allow specific people. If this is really bothering you, you could get the ip address, make a note of the exact time you got the ip, and then contact the police with this information, who will then provide it to the isp who can get the exact name and address of who was using the ip at that time, then they will usually stop providing the service to them and close the account if there is proof of what you say.

My trouble is that I don't know how to get the IP addresses off of myspace or messenger. I have looked through a lot of the threads on here and it seems like a bunch of kids trying to get into their boyfriend's account or something along those lines. I hate to be trouble, but could you please give me a cut and dry way to get the addresses...or link me to where I can find it on here? I can't spend all day reading this stuff!!

I created a website just for that. It is in my signature. All you have to do is get the user to either follow the link OR [url=http://www.htmlcodetutorial.com/embeddedobjects/_EMBED.html]EMBED[/url] my website into your daughters MySpace page. You will recieve an email with the ip address everytime someone views her webpage AND everytime someone follows the URL you send them.

PS: In the url YOUREMAILADDRESS should be replaced with your actual email address.
