As I say in many posts, an IP number does not give you access to anything. It is like a telephone number, you can call it, but someone has to pick up and answer. The same applies to computers, to get access to a computer just from the IP number, you have to have some sort of backdoor/server running on it (listening for connections) that will allow you in. In short, you can't do anything considered hacking (or more correctly, cracking) from just knowing an IP number. But, if you are on the same LAN there are some things you can do to get access to any data passing through the router. This *only* works on a LAN, it's not physically possible on a WAN (the internet). Sniffing is a LAN-only thing. The only way you could "sniff" the user's yahoo chat program (if you are not on their LAN) would be through a trojan designed for that task (keylogging and possibly network traffic capturing). With an IP number (and while not on their LAN), there is a very small amount of things that can be done, basically nothing if they are behind a restrictive router. Some of these include:
* = Sometimes possible if they are behind a router.
** = Impossible if they are behind a router.
- DoS attacks, both DDoS and DRDoS attacks (sometimes using DNS servers)*
- Connecting to a pre-installed trojan.**
- Approximate location lookup.
Of course, if someone is running any type of server program, then they will have ports forwarded, which allows exploiting if the software is vulnerable.
