*****ing intruder...?

I have a D-Link router and I was notified by a program stating that an intruder was detected on my network. The IP was a private IP from inside my network, so I guess what I am asking is, is it possible that a neighbor has connected to my wireless access point? If so, I have read that WEP and WPA protection is weak, but should I still invoke either to prevent further connections? I tried to use NMAP, but it stated that the ip was disconnected.

Thanks in advance.

any type of security is better than none. WPA is a better choice that WEP imo, but mac address filtering is also effective. What that is if you didnt know already is only allow those devices with the specific MAC addresses on the access list to connect to the AP. (ie. your devices only)

I did * second of googling and found this for you:

I dont know if thats your router type but I would imagine the IOS (firmware) is similar so you should be able to figure it out.

hope that helps.

thanks

Halla,
Thanks for the reply, however I have updated the firmware and downloaded the program Network Magic from the D-Link site. Once I installed this program, I noticed a Sony network device showing up on my network. I will have to look to see if MAC filtering is an option on the router that I have. I have searched the net and found several places but this one seemed to offer more tools: http://www.pdaconsulting.com/blackhat.htm
