Welcome to the forums rez
I study internet computing at uni
That's good, but I would seriously consider doing some coding on your own time. Don't just stick to university curriculum. I haven't gone through uni yet, but as far as I'm concerned, learning on your own doing things you like is more useful and educational that just following what your instructor says.
So, what do you guys think of Java script, in terms of its power, in both processing and various tasks? And once I have an indepth, photographic knowledge of it, will I be able to write programs such as encryters and decrypters, port scanners and the like?
I know it's no where near as good as C, but me being me, ill never learn something like C
By "Java script" I hope you mean Java, because JavaScript isn't going to help you write a port scanner
Java is a powerful language, and there will always be someone saying C > Java, or that Java > C. In the end, it comes down to what you like to program in. Personally, I prefer the syntax of C-like languages over Java. You will definitely be able to do the things you mentioned in Java.
Also, don't say things like "I'll never learn C". Once you get your head around pointers and memory (which I haven't yet ) you'll be fine.
Stumbling across your forum really did give me a burst of enthusiasm for really getting to grips with programming. Hopefully, by the end of my next uni term, ill have a comprehensive knowlege of Java, PHP and JS. I already know html and can include css, but that isnt really what im incredibly interested in. Its good, but not completely my cup of coffee... mainly due to the fact that they are incredibly simple.
I like to think of it like this.
HTML + PHP + some JS and CSS = $20.00/hr, or $*00 all at once freelancing
Java = $20,000-$*0,000 per year, depending on skill
Loving to program = Priceless
As long as you love programming, you'll be able to learn anything. Have fun, and don't limit yourself to just 4 years in college. The best knowledge is the knowledge you find yourself. Enjoy your stay, but don't depend on me to help you with Java, because I have zero knowledge of Java
