Newbe here with a couple of questions

Good morning, newbe here.

Before making my request I want to say that I've been a lurker here for some time, in fact I now use this forum as my homepage.

My question, not sure if this is the right section to make the request, but here it is.

Can someone recommend a file downloader (free of course) I can use where I can programe several files at once and leave my machine to take over, presently I'm operating from XP home edition and can only download 2 or perhaps 3 programs at once, and then it takes forever to receive them.

I'm using a phone line for the internet, where I live I cannot get cable. On this subject, I've heard that I can get a fast connection from sattalite, can someone give me some info on this subject.

most of the d/l accelerators are loaded with stuff you don't need, many even have spyware. Download Accelerator works for me, it has ad banners unless you buy it, but nothing more.

I hate to say it but I'm a little dubious about the above posting -- the one with the poor English. I'm reading lots of detail concerning who is supposedly harrassing them. At the same time, I see virtually no detail on how they could have had all their important documents copied, and how their computer was hacked.

I've seen this kind of posting many times before, from different people, but all suffering a similar form of paranoia.

The problem is in distinguishing legitimate concern from imaginary/illusionary fears from posters who describe their experiences.

I wouldn't use DAP. Granted it works great however it comes loaded with tons of spyware. They also stipulate in their privacy policy that they will do whatever they want with the information collected.

Don't get me wrong, I once was an avid DAP user. That is until I ran SpyBot and watched it freak out when it found everything DAP was doing. If you are the slighest bit concerned with your privacy I'd stay away from it.

Hey, what you are asking here is called Number of Simultaneous Downloads allowed per site. It has nothing to do with bandwidth, so accelerators will not help in this case. You should try some optimizer software (though it just changes registry settings, nothing else, so it could be done manually)



Here is the explanation from few programs I used (but not anymore, cause I find non-install/setup "lean" ones, that do just the same thing (its registry setting/value):



Number of Allowed Simultaneous HTTP Connections (SYSTEM MECHANIC):

According to standard HTTP protocol, browsers are not supposed to have more than two connections established to a single web site at one time. Using this option you can override this restriction and instruct Windows to allow Internet Explorer to establish up to ten connections to a single web server at one time, drastically improving performance. This option is divided into two groups: HTTP 1.0 server connections and HTTP 1.1 server connections. To adjust these settings, check the box labeled "Specify Number of Allowed Simultaneous HTTP Connections and drag the corresponding slider controls to increase or decrease the number of allowed simultaneous HTTP connections for the corresponding server type.



Max. connections per server (TWEAK MASTER):

To abide by the HTTP specifications, Windows limits the number of simultaneous connections that it will make to a single HTTP (web) server. This affects all Windows Internet applications that use the standard API, including Internet Explorer. The behavior can be seen when downloading multiple files from a web site only a certain number (2 or 4) will be active at any one time.

By default Windows will limit connections to a single HTTP 1.0 server to 4 simultaneous connections. Connections to a single HTTP 1.1 server will be limited to 2 simultaneous connections. The HTTP 1.1 specification (RFC2068) mandates the two connection limit while the four connection limit for HTTP 1.0 is a self-imposed restriction by Internet Explorer.

Raise this limit to a higher number, in order to enable simultaneous downloads from the same web site and to make web page rendering in Internet Explorer smoother and faster.
