Avast is alright. It doesn't scan packed files. There's Avg, Kaspersky, bitdefender,Panda,norton, McAfee,NOD*2, and some that I forgot. But when tested kaspersky is the best. I would try zonealarms firewall also. I use Avast with another antivirus. But I've heard some bad things about bitdefender. Try them and see for yourself.
